Cora Howard Brewer

     Cora Howard Brewer, 88, of Burgaw, died Wednesday, April 2, at Pender Memorial Hospital . No services will be held at this time. Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, Burgaw.

 

George "Kilowatt" Cannon

     George "Kilowatt" Cannon, 75, of Sneads Ferry, died April 1, at home.

    A funeral was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at the Little Zion AME Church in Sneads Ferry with the Rev. Reginald Bradshaw officiating. Burial followed in Sneads Ferry Community Cemetery with full military honors.

    George was a member of Little Zion AME Zion Church for more than 45 years and formerly served on the trustee board. He was a licensed electrician with Civil Service aboard Camp Lejeune for 32 years and served in the U.S. Army and Army National Guard.

    Survivors include wife of 56 years, Mary Louise Whitney Cannon of the home; son, Ricky J. Cannon of Sneads Ferry; daughters, Patricia Everett of Raleigh and Coreena McDonald of Surf City; three grandchildren; sisters, Queenie Trapp of Little Mountain S.C., and Sarah Robinson of New Jersey.

    The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Morgan Funeral Home in Jacksonville where ritualistic services will be preformed by Mount Horeb Lodge 73 of the Masonic Order.

 

Gene Bradley Dague

     Gene Bradley Dague, 83, of Wilmington died March 27, at Woodbury Wellness Center .

    He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and received the Purple Heart from wounds received at Iwo Jima in World War II, and was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Cape Fear Chapter No 636 in Wilmington .

    He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Marjorie DeFord Dague.

    Survivors include his daughter, Linda Dague Ford of Stella; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Eastern N.C. Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 220 , Raleigh , NC 27605 .

 

Walter Pate Eakins, Sr.  

    Walter Pate Eakins, Sr., 72, of Burgaw, died Wednesday, April 2, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center . The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 4 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, Burgaw. Burial was in Eakins family cemetery.

 

John Joseph Gavin, Sr.,

     John Joseph Gavin, Sr., 71, of Hampstead, died Sunday, March 30, at Woodbury Wellness Center . No public services are scheduled at this time.

    Mr. Gavin is survived by his wife, Sandra Frost Gavin of the home; two daughters, Ruth Goff of Sampson County and Lynn Lancaster of Castle Hayne; one son, John Gavin, Jr. of Garner, NC; and four grandchildren.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice or to a Church of your choice.

Louis Alman Jones Ph.D

     Louis Alman Jones Ph.D. passed away March 26, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after a short illness. Lou had recently resided at Woodbury Wellness Center of Hampstead. He was born Nov. 20, 1924, in Ashburnham , Massachusetts . He was preceded in death by his wife Alice Jones. He is survived by a son, Brian Jones of Wilmington , North Carolina .

    Lou received his bachelor's degree from Clark University , and his Ph.D. from Texas A&M. He retired from North Carolina State University where he taught organic chemistry. He also worked for the federal government as a chemist. After his retirement Lou worked as a realtor in Hampstead , North Carolina .

    A memorial services will be held at the memorial garden at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 107 Deerfield Drive , Hampstead , NC (just off Highway 17N) April 12, at 2 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be may be made to the American Heart Association.

John Adolph McCommas, Jr.

     John Adolph McCommas, Jr., 53, of Burgaw, died Saturday, April 5 at home. The funeral was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 8 at Burgaw Baptist Church . Burial was in Galeed Baptist Church Cemetery , Bladenboro. Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, Burgaw.

 

Gracie Carter Best Rivenbark

     Gracie Carter Best Rivenbark, 87, of Surf City , died Saturday, April 5, at Davis Health Care.

    She was born in Sampson County on Feb 27, 1921, the daughter of the late Murd Addison and Katie Dell Hollingsworth Carter. She was preceded in death by Pete Best, father of her children, her second husband, George Rivenbark, and a daughter, Dawn Best Ottaway.
Mrs. Rivenbark was a charter member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Clinton . She moved to Surf City in 1958 where she had a summer home since 1947. She was active in the very young Surf City Rescue Squad in the early 1960's and was also town clerk of Surf City for several years.

    Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Edens and husband, Bill of Surf City and Dimples King and husband, Eddie of Greensboro, a son-in-law, Ronnie Ottaway of Surf City ; nine grandchildren, Rick King, Tammy Foust, Bryan, Mike, Curtis and Danny Edens, and Will, Rusty, and Kent Ottaway; twelve great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

    A funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at Andrews Mortuary Hampstead Chapel by Rev. Russell Knowles. Interment followed in Sea Lawn Memorial Park .

    The family received friends from 7-8 p.m. Monday at Andrews Mortuary Hampstead Chapel.

Marjorie Lucille Worthington  

    Marjorie Lucille Worthington, of Sneads Ferry, passed to eternal life on April 3, after a six-year battle with cancer.

    Surviving are her boyfriend and partner, Bruce M. Turci Jr. of the home; and her loving daughter, Kelly Michelle Worthington of Florence , Ala.

    A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 7, at Johnson Funeral Home in Jacksonville .

    In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Margie Worthington, to The Zimmer Cancer Center, 2131 S. 17th St. , Wilmington , NC 28402 .
